Implementing Fourth Level
The Higher Education Authority’s Programme for Research in Third Level Institutes (PRTLI), Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and the research councils' Graduate Research Education Programmes (GREPs) are all supporting increased investment in graduate education. Other supporting universities’ initiatives in this area include the Health Research Board and Science Foundation Ireland.
Much of funders’ support is towards the development of 'structured PhD programmes' that will integrate into the traditional PhD additional support and guidance for students through the provision of research and generic skills development opportunities. These opportunities also allow students to better understand and develop the application of their skills and abilities across a wide range of careers.
To lead and inform the development of these 'structured PhD programmes' the Irish Universities Association, with support from the HEA’s SIF programme, is coordinating a Deans of Graduate Studies Network-the Fourth Level Network, which is engaged in a number of activities.
