Trinity College Dublin was founded in 1592, and
is the single constituent college of the University
of Dublin. Though long established, Trinity College
has maintained a strong tradition of scholarship
and research which adapts effectively to the
needs of successive generations. To prospective
students, it will be Trinity's present standing as
a high-ranking centre of learning, and its
international recognition as one of Europe's
leading universities, that will be most important.
Trinity College Dublin has over 15,000 students pursuing courses of study within 24 Schools. The University offers a wide range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level across its three Faculties:
- Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
- Engineering, Mathematics and Science
- Health Sciences
Most academic activity of the university is concentrated on its
historic main campus located in the heart of Ireland's capital city.
Students in the Health Sciences also benefit from a purpose built
facility in the largest teaching hospital in Ireland, St. James's Hospital,
and another in the newly-completed regional general hospital in the
Dublin suburbs at Tallaght.
The vigour of any university must be judged by its commitment to research. As a research-intensive university, Trinity prides itself on its research excellence and strong tradition of research-led teaching.
The Library is the heart of research activity, and here Trinity is particularly fortunate. With a collection of approximately 4.25 million volumes, the College Library is one of the largest in Europe. Along with the British Library in London and the university libraries at Oxford and Cambridge, it enjoys the privilege of receiving all Irish and U.K. copyright material.
Trinity prides itself also on its tradition of personal contact between
staff and students, encouraged by its collegiate atmosphere. Its staff
and students form a vibrant academic community, with several
hundred students and a number of staff living on campus. College
provides an impressive range of facilities and services - dining hall,
cafeterias and bars, health centre and a crèche - and ensures a varied
social life sustained by a host of student societies and sports clubs
located in the state-of-the-art sports centre.
