The University of Limerick (UL) was established in
1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education,
Limerick and constituted as the University of
Limerick in 1989. Situated in the mid-west region
of Ireland, the University of Limerick is an
autonomous, internationally focused university
with over 11,500 students and 1,200 staff. It is a
young, energetic and enterprising university with a
proud record of innovation in education and
excellence in research and scholarship.
The University's mission is to promote and advance learning and knowledge through teaching, research and scholarship in an environment which encourages innovation and upholds the principles of free enquiry and expression. Particular attention is paid to the generation of knowledge which is relevant to the needs of Ireland's continuing socioeconomic development. UL offers a range of programmes up to doctorate and post-doctorate levels in Business, Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Science & Engineering, Education & Health Sciences, Informatics & Electronics.
UL has a superb campus of over 130 hectare with outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities which enhance this exceptional learning and working environment. The campus is located 5km from Limerick City and 20km from Shannon International Airport. Adjacent to the University is the National Technology Park (NTP), Ireland's first science/technology park which is home to over 80 organisations.
The University of Limerick supports links between teaching and
research and between undergraduate and postgraduate education. In
addition to offering the traditional PhD, the University is now offering
structured doctoral degree programmes, which include taught elements
in addition to the research-based PhD thesis. In recognising that many
doctoral graduates will pursue careers outside of academia, the
University provides additional transferable and professional skills
training for research students.
The main areas of research in the University include; materials and
surface sciences (nanomaterials and biomaterials); biomedical
engineering; structural biology; biophotonics; software research; the
study of knowledge in society; energy and sustainable development;
food and health sciences and work quality and productivity. The
University boasts four international level research institutes and over
30 research centres. UL has an established reputation for working with
industry, through one of the largest cooperative education programmes
in Europe, and through its many research projects with industry. UL
looks forward to developing further links at graduate level, through
placements in industry, co-funding arrangements, and stronger
industry- University partnerships. UL aims to build on existing links with
other educational institutions, both in Ireland and overseas to provide
the best possible educational experience for all of its graduates.
